The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality is taking decisive steps to address the ongoing water crisis in the Kai Garib Local Municipality. On the 16th of December 2024, the Executive Mayor of the District Municipality, Councillor Maryna Basson and Councillor Marius Louw, conducted an oversight visit to the area to engage with the Mayor of Kai !Garib, Cllr Matthys and his team about the challenges affecting water supply and the measures being implemented to ensure residents have access to adequate drinking water during the festive season.

During the visit, Mayor Basson inspected the water infrastructure, which has been under immense strain due to increased demand and aging facilities. The discussions highlighted several critical challenges, including rising water consumption during the summer months, aging purification plants in Cillie and Lutzburg, and logistical challenges in high-lying areas.
Executive Mayor Basson commended the efforts of the local municipality to mitigate the crisis, including the ongoing expansion of the Kenhardt/Lennertsville Water Treatment Plant and the installation of new equipment at the Keimoes River Pump Station, which has already boosted production by 60%. These measures are expected to improve water availability for the communities during the peak festive season. The visit also focused on contingency plans to ensure consistent water supply. Local leaders outlined strategies such as increased water tanker deliveries to underserved areas and closer monitoring of the expanded infrastructure to meet growing demand.

It is imperative that there are open communication channels between residents and their ward councillors. Strengthened communication channels will ensure that community concerns are addressed promptly, and residents remain informed about progress and solutions. Collaboration between communities and local leadership is critical in overcoming challenges like these.
